Paralegal Salary Information:

Like most industries, your annual salary will increase based on the number of years of experience in the field. For a start, you can expect to be paid around $40,000 per year, and it can potentially be a lot more if you are working with good established law firm or hired by the federal government. The value of a paralegal is viewed greatly, as you will be the one preparing all the necessary data for the lawyer so that he will have the cold hard facts at his disposal when in court.

Paralegal Education Requirements:

If you wish to become a paralegal, the easiest and fastest method is to obtain a bachelor’s degree of your own liking, and subsequently complete a paralegal program as well as gain at least 2 years worth of substantive paralegal experience. If you choose to skip the paralegal program altogether, you will be required to have at least 3 years of paralegal experience instead. Once you fulfill the prerequisites, you will be eligible to take the Paralegal Advanced Competency Examination, which covers basic legal facts and code of ethics, along with specialty sections. Depending on which state you choose to practice in, you may need to pass a test related to state-specific laws.

Paralegal Work Environment:

As a paralegal, you will be  working with law firm and assigned to work with a lawyer. You will always be working in an office environment, which is air-conditioned, clean and pleasant for the most part. There will be times when you need to travel to law libraries, away from your desk in order to research and study case histories. As for working hours, unless there are emergency cases which come with an urgent deadline, you will typically be working on an average of 40 hours per week.

The demand for certified paralegals is always there, especially from corporate legal departments and private law firms. The outlook for this career is very good and should be given serious consideration for those seeking a career in the legal field.
